On January 3, 2025 – The Social Responsibility Committee of Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore, hosted an impactful panel discussion on Sustainable Waste Management, bringing together experts from academia and industry to address one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time. The event began with a warm welcome by Dr Deepankar Chakrabarti, Director of the Institute. The discussion was moderated by Dr Ghanshyam Pandey, Associate Professor and Chairperson of the Social Responsibility Committee, who set the stage for a dynamic exchange of ideas.

The panel discussion commenced with Dr Vijai Singhal, Executive Director of the Recycling and Environment Industry Association of India, setting the tone with a nostalgic reflection on the sustainable practices of the 1980s and 1990s. He shared vivid anecdotes about how families back then embraced a culture of reusing and sharing resources, such as passing down clothes within households, thereby minimising waste. Dr Singhal used this nostalgic comparison to highlight how societal habits have evolved over time, leading to a surge in consumerism and waste generation in the modern era. He underscored the pressing need for systematic waste management solutions to address these challenges effectively, setting a reflective and thought-provoking tone for the discussion.

Prof. Ajay Kalamadhad, Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Guwahati, provided a compelling perspective on the crucial role of individual responsibility in achieving sustainable waste management. He emphasised that meaningful change begins at the grassroots level, with individuals adopting sustainable habits and making conscious efforts to reduce waste. Prof. Kalamadhad delved into the transformative power of social behaviour, illustrating how small, community-driven actions can collectively create a significant impact in addressing the waste crisis. Building on this, he critically analyzed the effectiveness of India’s waste management policies, such as the Solid Waste Management Rules (2016) and the Plastic Waste Management Rules (2021). He also made a strong case for integrating waste management awareness into the education of management students. By equipping future leaders with a deep understanding of sustainability practices and the importance of waste reduction, he argued, institutions can foster a generation that is better prepared to drive impactful environmental solutions in their personal and professional lives. His insights reinforced the importance of combining policy, education, and individual action to achieve long-term sustainability.

Prof. Sankar Ganesh, Professor at BITS Hyderabad, offered an insightful overview of the numerous government initiatives aimed at minimizing waste and promoting sustainability. He highlighted programs designed to address critical issues, such as solid waste segregation, recycling, and the reduction of plastic use, emphasising their potential to create transformative change when effectively implemented. Prof. Ganesh underscored the critical role of policy and regulatory frameworks in driving sustainable practices. He explained how these frameworks provide the foundation for structured waste management efforts, ensuring accountability and consistency across different sectors. However, he noted that their success depends heavily on active participation and collaboration from both institutions and individuals. He inspired a call to action, encouraging everyone to view themselves as stakeholders in these efforts and to contribute meaningfully toward a waste-free and sustainable future.
