From Corporate Professional to Entrepreneur: The Journey of Saurav Verma
From the vibrant city of Ranchi, Jharkhand, emerged a young professional with a vision far beyond the conventional path laid before him. Born into a service-class family where stability was highly valued, Saurav Verma grew up believing in the virtues of hard work, discipline, and perseverance. Yet, deep within, he nurtured a desire to create something of his own.
His formative years at St. Thomas School, Dhurwa, instilled in him the values that would later become the foundation of his entrepreneurial journey. Driven by ambition and a thirst for knowledge, he pursued his MBA from the Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow, where he developed the business acumen and leadership skills that would shape his future.
Following his post-graduation, Saurav began his professional career with Tata McGraw Hill Education, gaining valuable exposure to the education sector and developing a strong understanding of sales, marketing, and customer engagement. Seeking broader challenges and greater responsibility, he later joined Next Education India Pvt. Ltd., where he progressed through leadership roles and successfully managed business operations across multiple territories.
His corporate journey provided invaluable lessons in market dynamics, team leadership, business development, and customer behavior. However, despite a promising career trajectory, Saurav remained drawn to entrepreneurship. The aspiration to build something meaningful in his hometown eventually became too strong to ignore.
The Birth of Tokri Megamart
In 2018, Saurav returned to Ranchi and took a leap of faith by launching Tokri Megamart, an FMCG supermart established through personal savings and market credit support. The venture was built on a simple vision: to provide consumers with quality products, convenience, and a modern retail experience.
What began as a startup soon gained momentum. Through customer-centric operations, disciplined execution, and consistent service, Tokri Megamart established itself as a recognized retail brand in Ranchi. Within two years, the business achieved an annual turnover of approximately ₹5 crore, validating the team's efforts and strengthening confidence in the entrepreneurial journey.
Diversification and New Ventures
As the business stabilized, Saurav explored opportunities beyond retail. He ventured into the wellness sector through a family-owned fitness initiative, reinforcing his belief that businesses should create value while positively impacting communities.
The COVID-19 pandemic brought unprecedented challenges for businesses across sectors. While the essentials category helped Tokri remain operational, the post-pandemic landscape became increasingly competitive as numerous new players entered the FMCG retail space. The changing market dynamics required fresh thinking and strategic diversification.
Entering the Hospitality Industry
Driven by a passion for hospitality and consumer experiences, Saurav identified an opportunity in the food and beverage sector. After extensive research and planning, he acquired the franchise rights for Moti Mahal Delux Tandoori Trail, one of India's most iconic restaurant brands.
In February 2023, the Ranchi outlet was launched in Argora. The restaurant quickly gained traction among diners and established itself as a premium destination for North Indian cuisine. While the venture generated strong revenues, it also offered important lessons about franchise economics, operational management, customer experience, and long-term business sustainability.
A Defining Milestone: Hindustan Unilever Dealership
The most significant milestone in Saurav's entrepreneurial journey came with the acquisition of the Hindustan Unilever (HUL) Dealership for the Ranchi region.
For any entrepreneur in the FMCG ecosystem, partnering with one of India's most respected and trusted companies represents more than a business opportunity—it is a validation of years of credibility, consistency, and market understanding.
With an initial business volume of approximately ₹50 crore annually, the HUL dealership marked a strategic transition from retail and franchising into large-scale FMCG distribution. It expanded the organization's reach, strengthened its supply chain capabilities, and positioned it for sustainable long-term growth.
This achievement was not the result of a single decision but the culmination of years of persistence, calculated risk-taking, learning from failures, and continuously adapting to changing market conditions.
The Journey Continues
Today, Saurav's journey reflects the evolution of an entrepreneur who moved beyond the comfort of a stable corporate career to build businesses across retail, hospitality, and FMCG distribution.
Behind every milestone lies years of sacrifice—missed family moments, financial discipline, sleepless nights, and countless uncertainties. Yet each challenge contributed to the lessons that shaped the path forward.
As he continues to build and grow, Saurav remains guided by a simple belief:
Entrepreneurship is not just about building businesses; it is about building resilience, creating opportunities, and constantly reinventing yourself.
