On September 19th, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore, held a captivating debate between seniors and juniors on the topic: “Military/Political Intervention by Powerful Nations in the Name of Humanitarian Causes or Democracy is Justified and Beneficial in the Modern Era.” The session delved into whether interventions by global powers, often justified by humanitarian or democratic motives, are truly beneficial in today’s world. Both sides presented well-structured arguments, revealing the complexity of the issue.

Those in favor of the motion argued that powerful nations’ interventions have often restored peace and stability in conflict-ridden regions. They highlighted that such interventions could prevent larger conflicts by addressing issues before they escalate. Additionally, they pointed to the success of these efforts in fighting terrorism and preventing genocide, using examples from the Middle East and Asia. Humanitarian assistance was another key point, where interventions have provided immediate relief during crises, such as preventing large-scale human rights abuses like the genocide in Bangladesh.

Opponents of the motion raised critical concerns about the unintended consequences of such interventions. They noted that despite noble intentions, military involvement often leads to civilian casualties, intensifying the suffering of those they aim to help. Furthermore, they emphasized how foreign intervention can create long-term dependency, weakening the sovereignty and self-sustaining governance of the affected nations. Violations of national sovereignty were also discussed, with arguments that military interventions often fuel resistance and anger among local populations.

The debate concluded with both sides presenting strong and well-reasoned arguments, leaving the audience with a deeper understanding of the complexities surrounding military and political interventions. The event fostered an enriching intellectual exchange and highlighted the importance of critical thinking in global affairs. We are proud to announce the winners of the debate competition: Sarthak Kahre (For the Motion), Arpit Jaiswal (Against the Motion), and Saloni Singh (Against the Motion), with an honorary mention for Venessa Stuart (Against the Motion). The session ended on a thought-provoking note, emphasizing learning over victory.
