Paper Boat Activity - Learning Curve & Product Layout-JIM Indore

Posted on: Dec 11, 2025

On 9th December 2025, an engaging classroom activity on Learning Curve and Product Layout was conducted by Prof. Jagdish Bhagwat, during our Operations Management session at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore. The activity involved all students participating in a hands-on exercise where paper boats were produced using newspaper as the raw material. The main purpose of this activity was to help us understand how planning, layout design, and experience affect productivity in real-life operations.

The class was divided into two teams of five members each, and we were given five minutes to produce the maximum number of paper boats.

  • Round 1: A sad song played in the background slowed us down. There was no planning; everyone picked raw materials randomly, and the output was low.
  • Round 2: The song “Breathless” increased our energy, and the speed improved slightly. But due to no clear roles and no proper layout, the results were still not satisfactory.
  • Round 3:  Both teams merged into a single unit. Four members concentrated exclusively on folding boats, while the professor managed the cutting process and determined the appropriate quantity of raw material. This organised production layout minimised waste, streamlined workflow, and led to a substantial increase in output over the previous rounds.

The activity clearly showed how important planning, coordination, and layout design are in any production process. As we moved from Round 1 to Round 3, our performance improved because of better experience, which reflects the learning curve. The structured product layout in the final round helped reduce waste, avoid confusion, and increase productivity. Overall, the activity gave us a practical understanding of how organised processes lead to better results in operations management.
